Preparing For The Winterby Larry Stern from interview with Walter MetzgerHow the Metzger family (and probably other families) prepared for fall and winter. After Labor Day, all the business in the area would close. The Metzgers would order 25 lbs of coffee beans from Kinney & Company in Binghamton NY. The family would hand grind the beans as needed. They would buy a barrel of flour approx. 194 lbs that would last the winter. Meat was bought in Barryville at Ami Quicks General store from the butcher. It was along trip to make during rain and snow storms. If they didn't go to the general store, a lot of the boarding houses had their own herds. They would kill the oldest cow and buy meat from them. Other types of meat available from hunting were deer, rabbits & grouse. Fred Metzger also raised Hogs. He would make sausage, smoked ham, bloodwurst, head cheese and other foods. All winter long, the Metzgers ate buckwheat and sourdough pancakes. If syrup was no longer available, they would substitute with bacon grease or salt pork. Across Beaver Brook (Tax Payers pond now) there was a farm called West Farm. There the Metzgers would buy their butter & milk. The farm was owned by Theodore West, nicknamed Dory. The biggest crop for this farm was corn for the cows, grown by Mrs. West. Return To Stories Index
