Schumacher Pond

told to Larry stern by Walter Metzger

Schumachers Pond and Schumachers Pond Road were named after the Schumacher family.

Henry dammed up Beaver Brook and made the pond. It was full of Bullheads and pickerel. Back in time, John and Henry Schumacher ran a fish route in the summertime. They would go every Friday to all the local boarding houses supplying them with fresh fish.

Walter Metzger and other residents would walk to the Schumacher house to pick up fresh fish for their families. John Schumacher had a heavy German accent. Walter and his friends would always ask how he was doing and John would always answer them in his heavy German accent with the phrase I feel like 2 legs on 1/2 a dog (he was tired).

The local children made sure they were nice to the Schumachers because they had permission to fish the pond. John and Henry were very nice men and loved the children. The Schumachers lived in a white house which still stands today. Accross from the house, there used to be a chicken coop.

A piece of the foundation is still there. Also an apple tree approx. 85-95 years old is still there. Walter Metzger used to pick apples there as a young boy.

This story was told to me by Walter Metzger age 97.
