postcard from our private collection
A postcard captioned At The Post Office, Yulan, NY. No postmark,
appears to be c. 1905. Note the dogs pulling the little boy. The old man
seated in black is the postmaster.
Man dressed in black is John C. Metzger Postmaster, Walter Metzger's
Grandfather.
Louis Hazen is the boy sitting on the dog cart.
Henry Wolff is standing up holding on to the motorcycle. He is Walter
Metzger's Uncle.
Notes: John C. Metzger used to wear copper bands on his arms to try to
cure his rheumitism.
Story:
When Walter Metzger was 5 or 6 years old , he was a chunky child.
A boarder named Charles Hartnet who used to stay at the Bornsteins, would
pay Walter Metzger 25cents to try to squeeze through the space between
the post office and the building on the right.
I guess Charles Hartnett thought this was funny.
He would also pay Walter 25 cents to get on the back of John C. Metzgers
big Tom turkey and ride him.
