Bodine Lake
From an original brochure from Bodin's On Bodin Lake: Bodin Lake is a natural lake and was raised by Mr. Bodine. It was stocked with pickeral, bass, perch and other fish. Bodin's cottages were the pioneers in the summer boarding house business in Sullivan County. The cottages were established in 1880 as a small farm boarding house with enough room for 12 guests, The rooms were frequently refurnished and kept in modern condition. At some point in time, there were 30 large airy rooms, a double piazza extending all around the main building. Some rooms had running water and baths. All the rooms had electric lights. Bodins cottages were know for their French-American cuisine. The vegetables and eggs were supplied from near by farms. Bodine Lake is located between Yulan and Eldred. During the winter in the 1800's or early 1900's, the men in town would place a small pine tree in Bodine Lake. The men would bet what day the tree would fall through the ice. In the early 1900's, Sarah Crandall, one of the daughters from the Cold Spring Farm on Beaver Brook Road and her boyfriend Willie Weber from the Weber Saw Mill also from Beaver Brook road drowned in Bodine Lake around Christmas Day. To this day, a small pine tree is still placed in Bodine Lake. It's probably to let everyone know that the ice is melted and not for betting purposes.
