About This SiteThis site originally began as a way to share our postcard collection with our friends and family. But by talking to local folks, we discovered that there are a lot of stories behind all those old postcards. So the "little website" evolved into what you see now. Since history is about people (not just old pictures!) we wanted to make this site as interactive as possible. Features such as What/Where is This? and Then and Now were created to get people involved with the site, to contribute to our knowledge of the area. The historical knowledge on the site has mostly been gathered by chatting with the locals at the post office, deli, grocery store, general store, town hall meetings -- all those places people congregate in rural America. It's not meant to be a scholarly discourse on local history, but a friendly "hey did ya know..." collection of recollections. If written source material was consulted, it has been credited. If there are any inaccuracies, please contact us. ABOUT US We (Larry and Ecki Stern) moved to the town of Yulan in March of 2000. We were enchanted with the rural location and the friendliness of the people here. Soon we began collecting postcards of the local area. Every time Larry received a postcard in the mail when he was in the Post Office, it seemed that someone would say, "Hey, I remember that place...." Larry Stern fell in love with Sullivan County while vacationing summers at the bungalow colonies as a child. He attended Sullivan County Community College studying Culinary Arts (we're waiting for him to open up his restaurant some day!). Ecki Stern is a website designer and designed this site. She has worked for The McGraw-Hill Construction Information Group in Manhattan on such sites as construction.com, enr.com and designbuildmag.com. THANKS Thanks to the following for their knowledge of the area: Walter Metzger (interviewed by Larry Stern April 30th & May 3rd 2002) & Mary Walton, Jane & Artie Bozan at the Bear Paw Lodge, Dickie Haas at The Colonial, Larry Woods, Dorothy Waltemath, Lynne Weber, Carl & Joan, Albert & Eleanor, Hilde & Cris at the PO, Doreen formerly at the deli and now at town hall, Martha & Bill at the General Store, the folks at Town Hall, Claudia B. at the old Schumacher house, Becky F. in Barryville, Maureen, John Conway, the folks at Sunshine Hall Free Library, Fred Reber, Roswell Hamrick, everyone who signed the guestbook.... and many more!
